AquaTrack System Smart Device Prototyping |
This system was a group project created for my Interactivity Design 3 course in YSDN. The goal was to develop a concept for a smart device relating to sustainable designs well as an app to accompany the device and supplement its function. My group chose to prototype a smart home water monitoring system called AquaTrack, complete with the device itself, sensor patches, and the AquaTrack iOS app. With AquaTrack, users will be able to monitor their home's water supply to help them understand exactly when, where, and how much water they're consuming in their home on a daily basis. Smart Water Meter The AquaTrack smart water meter will simply snap around the main water pipe in the user’s home, and will have to be plugged in to the nearest power outlet. The user will then connect it to their home’s Wi-Fi, and a blue light will signal when the connection is complete. This device will use ultrasonic technology in order to send pulses from one ultrasonic transducer to another. This will allow for the measure of the rate of water flow without having to cut through any pipes, and will prove effective by the ability to transmit the information gathered seamlessly to all other paired AquaTrack devices in the user’s home. The final water meter was prototyped in Adobe Illustrator. |
Sensor Patches The AquaTrack patches will simply attach to an exposed pipe of each of the user’s specified water flow appliances or fixtures via a sticker-like adhesive. Once placed, the user will press down on the AquaTrack logo to turn the sensor on, and a blue light will appear. The sensor batteries will be rechargeable. These sensors will contain the same ultrasonic technology as the smart water meter, but on a smaller scale. They will be to track the water flow rates relative to each individual appliance or fixture in the user’s home, so that they may get a sense of where the bulk of their water usage is coming from. Any additional sensors or replacements can be ordered from the AquaTrack website at the user’s convenience. The final sensors were prototyped in Adobe Illustrator. |
AquaTrack System iOS App |
This is the app that accompanies the AquaTrack Smart Water Monitoring system. Through AquaTrack for iOS, the user will be able to check their real-time water usage and set conservation goals for themselves. Other features include alerts, such as if the user is close to reaching their usage limit or if a fixture is left on, and the option to turn off the water supply, which can be controlled both from home and while the user is away.
